Summer is here and so are all the great designer fashions of the season. I love summer, being at the beach, spending time on the boat with family and friends. Living and working on the Connecticut shoreline has its advantages!

We've been moving displays around this month, trying to make more room for all the fantastic designer fashions that our consignors have brought us. On Friday, April 22, 2011 Susan brings her years of talent and expertise in the beauty, bridal, fashion and film industries exclusively to customers of The Cedar Chest as open the doors to Susan's Beauty Bar!

Specializing in flawless, glamorous, long-wearing make up and lash applications, Susan will be on hand to help you - whether you're looking for a new lip color for your brand new outfit, a skin care analysis, a seasonal update or a professional artist for your upcoming event, you can now find it at The Cedar Chest.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Susan credited her Mother with her red lipstick as being an early fashion inspiration. Her mother admired the fashion icons Coco Chanel, Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy.

"She is a brunette with blue eyes and fair skin. I remember her applying her lipstick very carefully while looking in her bedroom mirror. Then she sprayed herself with Chanel #5."

Susan knew at a young age that she wanted to be involved in the glamorous fashion industry and took the first step by applying to cosmetology school. After graduating she began her career as a hairdresser and make up artist at a Florida Redken salon. Along her career path as a professional make up artist, she worked at Lancome and Chanel in high-end retail stores including Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue. In 2006 Susan founded her own salon, The Beauty Bar, Inc. located on Long Island, NY. Her shop included retail sales of private label cosmetics, Better Botanicals skin care and various make up accessories. She provided professional airbrushing and lash applications for bridal, private and editorial clients. Her work has been featured in fashion magazines including Glamour and on the runways for NYC Fashion Week.

In 2010 Susan moved back to her Connecticut roots and began searching for new opportunities and was introduced to Nancy and The Cedar Chest. The rest is history! Please join us in welcoming Susan Pollack and Susan's Beauty Bar!

College Senior Discovers Consignment Shopping

For seniors in college, the countdown to graduation begins now. It's an exciting time, but can also be very stressful, especially when beginning the job search. Not only must they polish their interview skills, they must also dress to impress prospective employers. For many students who are about to start paying off college loans, the thought of shopping for a new wardrobe seems daunting - until they discover consignment shopping, that is!

Meet Jocelyn, a college senior majoring in business communication. She came to The Cedar Chest hoping to find ways to maximize her limited budget and coordinate a new wardrobe as she begins her interview process.

"My goal was to find quality designer clothing that I could use many ways. I definitely needed a good business suit, but I also wanted to be able to mix and match jackets with pants or skirts to wear at work or casually. Having a budget of $300, I knew that a trip to the mall was out of the question, so I turned to my Mom's favorite consignment shop for help. It felt great to walk into my first interview wearing my new Ann Taylor suit! Thanks Nancy, Jackie and everyone at The Cedar Chest for helping me."

New Year's Resolution - Cleaning out your closet

Is it time to reorganize? How about starting with your closet? Start small and don't be overwhelmed. Try to pick out any items that you haven't worn for a year and set them aside. Separate your designer, name brand labels such as Chicos, Coldwater Creek, J Jill, Ann Taylor, Talbots and others (check out our list on the home page) and bring them to the Cedar Chest to consign.

Other items can be donated to neighborhood charity organizations such as Goodwill, Salvation Army or your local church. Start now as we will be taking Spring Consignments on February 1st. Get them in early so you will get the most Bang for your Buck. Please make sure, as always, that they are clean, pressed and on hangers, and of course, current fashions.

The shop was filled with so many of our loyal customers as well as many new customers. Big selling items were holiday outfits, jewelry, boots and gift certificates! Miner Vincent, of Families in Need

Thanks to everyone who brought in a non-perishable donation for our food drive during Black Friday Blackout. This year we chose Families Helping Families, a local Clinton CT organization as the recipient of our donations.

Miner Vincent stopped by the shop on Monday to pick up our donation bins and an additional cash donation from The Cedar Chest to help their fuel assistance program. If you missed the event and would like to make a donation, please contact Miner at (860) 669-5592. Donations are accepted year round.

I actually stopped using dryer sheets this year when I found this inexpensive alternative. You can check it out on my Market America Store. One can of powder lasts me about 6 months, doing 3 loads a week.

Join us on Friday, November 26th for Black Friday Blackout, as we kick-off our 2010 holiday shopping season. Listen to a little music to get you in the spirit and pick up a little something for yourself while you're shopping for the fashionistas on your list!

This year, we've chosen to help support Families Helping Families, a local non-profit organization based in Clinton, CT. When you come to our event, please try to bring a non-perishable food item with you to help families who are struggling this year. If you'd prefer, you can make a cash donation toward fuel assistance, with checks payable to Families Helping Families. We'll be on hand to take pictures of our donations which will be posted on our website, Facebook, etc.

What items are most in need? Canned foods, peanut butter, baking mixes, jelly, sugar, macaroni and cheese.
